I have to say, I hate Ticketmaster. Although, I don't see the end of them coming any time soon. I've lost track of how many times they've had anti-trust lawsuits put against them, and somehow - they continue to win.
It's vexing.
(BTW - Journey/Def Leppard tickets out here in OR are $95 for the good seats. That isn't including the Ticketmaster Service Charge Bull $h!t. Why should I have to take out a small home equity loan to see my two favorite bands in concert...????)

I'm glsd to see you're blaming the correct people,, and not the venue itself. The promoters have more to do with ticket negotiations. Rant on! I am not a huge fan of ticketmaster either:)

It's one of those things where you realize that with more players wanting a piece of the pie, the pie must get bigger. The most amazing thing I've seen is that Ticketmaster actually charges $2.50 for you to print your own tickets on your printer. How screwed up is that?
I also thought it interesting that Tom Petty and Pearl Jam are on tour together. Both have been very vocal about how costly it is to be a music fan.
Still, though, how can I come up with something that most everyone hates yet still uses? I can't believe TicketBastard hasn't lost one of those anti-trust suits.

Because, unlike a lot of monopolies, it's entertainment, and therefore not needed for continued survival. Hence, there's no perceived need. And, it isn't like they really control the vast majority of ticket sales, after all, how many places in Denver do you pay at the door, or have their own ordering system over the Internet?
That, however, does not make it right.

I guess the real issue is that TicketBastard wasn't getting a piece of the brokerage action....
Read more about it.

TicketMaster can be blamed for many things, but not this one. Why can't you get closer than 20th row? Because those seats aren't available for you - or anyone - to purchase.
It doesn't matter what the big event is: Super Bowl, the must-see concert of the year (Tool), whatever. A ton of the best tickets are always skimmed off the top. Actually, "skim" makes it sound like it's a very small percentage of the whole, when actually, it can be a very significant percentage. Like up to 50%. These tickets are put aside for various groups: corporate sponsors, the record label, reviewers, the media, and (especially in the case of sporting events) local politicians who helped "make it all possible". A few of these tickets may trickle down to the general public - "win tickets to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers!", and don't forget the infamous grand-prize "win tickets to sit in the front row!" But most are spoken for.
Corporations will put up money to sponsor the RHCP concert or the Super Bowl, but they ask for (and receive) a large stack of tickets in response. KBCO will "present" the concert and run ads for it, but in exchange for tickets - both to give away on the air, and (more often) for their sales staff to give away to "good" clients. And the label has people they need to placate in each town, so plenty of tickets need to be set aside for them.
This is so widespread, common and accepted that I honestly can't work up any enthusiasm for demanding change. The only thing that bothers me is that Brand X Corporation:
* demands the best seats * rarely ends up giving away more than 50% of them * 25% of the people who get them don't go, and another 25% sell the tickets to brokers * 85% of the people who actually DO show up are there for one of three reasons: it's "something to do", it's "nice to be seen", and it's cool to be where the hoi polloi can't be.
So usually, the best seats end up being half-empty, and the people who are there don't care about the event taking place. It'd be nice to open those seats up to "real" fans, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do that.
Barely related note: occasionally, I'll hear a contest where you can "win a chance to see the concert from backstage!" if you're a music fan, why the hell would want to see a band from backstage?! At 99% of concerts, the stage faces OUTWARD, toward the crowd. The monitors face OUTWARDS, toward the crowd. From backstage, you can catch a glimpse of the bassist's right foot and the drummer from behind the cymbals, and it sounds like utter crap. You may as well "win a chance to attend the concert in the basement!" Yes, you might catch a glimpse of the band as they rush on or off stage, but at that point, they have no interest in talking to you. On the way out, they're focused on the gig. On the way back, they're too pumped up to chat. What you really want is a chance to attend a "meet-and-greet" (where the band chats breifly with folks from the crowd, usually after the show), and watch the concert from the crowd with everybody else.
Rant over.

Actually, there is an easy way for that to happen -- if the artist demands it. I understand Billy Joel started doing that recently.
